Why a copied key fails, and how a good one is made

Most people have had a copied key that felt wrong from the first turn: it goes in, it sticks, you jiggle it, it eventually works, and a month later it does not. That key was not cut to the lock. It was cut to another key, and every generation of copy inherits and amplifies the errors of the one before it. Add a duplicator with a worn cutter wheel or a tracer that has never been calibrated and the result is a key that is a few thousandths off on every cut.

"My key works but I have to jiggle it. Do I need a new lock?"
